Shipping Container Cost Guide 2026

Short answer: Shipping container prices in 2026 range from roughly $1,250 for a 20ft As-Is unit to $12,500+ for a converted 40ft home shell, driven mainly by size, condition grade, and specialty features. Delivery is priced separately.

The Four Factors That Set Price

Every container's price comes down to four variables: size (10ft through 40ft), condition grade (As-Is, Wind & Watertight, Cargo Worthy, or New/One-Trip), specialty features (refrigeration, open-top, multi-door access), and delivery distance from the nearest depot, which is quoted separately from the unit price.

Typical Price Ranges by Grade

As-Is units start under $1,500 and carry no condition guarantee. Wind & Watertight containers run from roughly $1,600 to $2,300 depending on size — the most popular choice for budget-conscious storage buyers. Cargo Worthy units, certified for ocean shipping, land between $2,400 and $3,200. New one-trip containers range from $3,800 up to $5,900 for a 40ft high cube.

Specialty and Modified Pricing

Refrigerated (reefer) units run $4,200–$4,900 due to the integrated cooling system. Open-top, double-door, and side-opening configurations add $500–$1,000+ over a comparable standard unit. Fully converted containers — offices, home shells, bar/kiosk builds — range from roughly $2,600 for basic shelving add-ons up to $12,500 for a full 40ft home shell.
